Artist/Facilitator: Ekin Bernay
The session is rooted in the series of performances happening in the home studio of Ekin Bernay throughout 2019, [Homework]. With the performance series Bernay is trying to discover the possibility of bringing a therapeutic approach to the space we inhibit as performers. The session begins in a circle and is facilitated by Bernay. The circle starts with a check in where we talk about the work and set the rules for sharing the space. For the second stage of the work, we inhibit the space together, accompanying the ambient sound of the room enhancing, reinterpreting or supporting the physical status of the room. The physical actions in the room are guided by the moment. We may place certain objects and materials in the room to interact with inspired by the content in the room but at times pure movement/stilness/text might be enough to hold the space. Once the session is concluded (and this will be 1 hour) we gather once again in the circle. This time we digest the work together, stepping outside of our physical actions, choices and states.
[Homework 0] used earth, sound and plastic as tools to interact with.
[Homework 1] used shadows, headlights and sound (crystal bowls and electronic sound manipulations).
[Homework 2] used movement, performance and spoken word techniques to create one work that grew from Rebecca Bellatoni's work entitled Spiral.
Ekin Bernay’s performance, [Homework X] will be realized in collaboration with Performistanbul at Worlbmon, as part of 16th Istanbul Biennial Public Programme. “Worlbmon” is a space created by Güneş Terkol and Güçlü Öztekin and is located on the 4th floor of Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture.
From the artist:
[Homework] is a live art series which debuted in my home studio in London. It is a sharing performance space that we opened once a month to live artists, curators and artists - from various disciplines - who worked with body and sound. This Thursday [Homework X], as an extension of [Homework] series, will be happening in Worlbmon, a space created by Güneş Terkol and Güçlü Öztekin,as part of the16th Istanbul Biennial Public Programme. [Homework X] will keep travelling and I really care about what will artists from Istanbul will express inside this collective space. I look forward to your participation.
