Lying beneath Taksim Gezi Park, Yaklaşım Tüneli Taksim is one of the remaining tunnels dug during the construction of Taksim Station on the M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line, whose foundations were laid in 1992. The passage is 200 metres long, 4 metres wide and 4.5 metres high, and opens into one of the city’s busiest underground stations at one end, and onto Taksim-Harbiye, one of its most active axes, at the other.
As you leave Yaklaşım Tüneli Taksim, which is being used as an Istanbul Biennial venue for the first time, take a rest under the shade of Gezi Park’s trees. In cooler weather, you can sit in the tea garden at the Harbiye end of the park with a hot drink and a view of the Bosphorus Bridge. An interlude in this serene green space offers the perfect time-out from the hustle and bustle of the city.
