Participating in the biennial with his sound installation at Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hammam, Tarek Atoui presents a solo performance at Salon İKSV. The performance will bring together varied sound material, ethnic (from the artist’s trips and voyages), industrial and natural field recordings from harbour cities across the world such as Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Singapore, Istanbul, and electronic sounds synthesised with his self-built software and interfaces.
These different sources are layered to create heterophony and never-ending allusions to the tarab of Arab music. Tarab is less a musical genre than the trance state derived from music once exposed to it over a long period of time.
During the performance, material and bodies will express themselves mutually until all geographical, temporal and physical boundaries collapse.
