Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture was established in 1937 with the aim of protecting and presenting major works of modern art in Turkey. The transformation of the Warehouse No. 5 on the Karaköy coast, which hosted the 9th and 11th editions of the Istanbul Biennial in 2005 and 2011, was ongoing for eight years. In the spring of 2020, the warehouse will open its doors as the Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture with a new design by Emre Arolat. The 16th Istanbul Biennial is the first exhibition that the museum hosts in its new building, before its official opening.
