Istanbul Biennial and Whitechapel Gallery, one of the most established arts institutions in the United Kingdom, collaborate on the event series called ‘THE RURAL’.

THE RURAL discussions, which will be moved to Istanbul with a panel hosted by the Istanbul Biennial at Salon İKSV on Monday, 18 June, focuses on how art could respond to major questions around mega-cities becoming increasingly inhospitable due to higher rents, denser housing and rising pollution, and whether the rural can offer a utopian potential.

In the sessions to be held under two headlines, ‘Thinking from the Rural’ and ‘Learning from the Rural’, the complex relationship between the urban and the rural, and the approach of the artistic and cultural milieu to the question will be discussed in the context of various artistic and curatorial practices, centring on the experiences of numerous initiatives. Artists, researchers and professionals who reflect on the urgent questions facing the rural today will engage in a dialogue.
