Optigull and Pesigull: A Good Neighbour Song invited children to visit the biennial after two seagulls

A children’s book was published within the scope of the 15th Istanbul Biennial with support by Bernard Leer Foundation. Featuring narratives by author Yekta Kopan and drawings by Gökçe Akgül, Optigull and Pesigull: A Good Neighbour Song is prepared to get young audiences acquainted with contemporary art in enjoyable ways with striking drawings, your-turn sections and rich content.

The story develops around two seagulls, Optigull and Pesigull, embarking on a journey to the venues of the 15th Istanbul Biennial and introducing seven works. Offering insight into the theme of the biennial by playful exercises, the book also features a glossary of contemporary art concepts towards the end.

The book was prepared under the academic supervision of Associate Professor Feyza Çorapçı from Boğaziçi University’s Psychology Department. Distributed with no fee at the Biennial venues and selected bookshops, Optigull and Pesigull was translated from Turkish to English to be shared with the arts institutions around the world to pose as an example for new tools to engage more with younger audiences. The book will also be available in Arabic for Arabic-speaking refugee children in Turkey.
